A bit later I come up with what you see below, just a fucking around exploration piece. learning the tricks of the app and whatnot. Anyway, there ya go. Work in progress

Is it "drawing" or "painting" ....
...when its entirely done digitally? And if its painting, is it finger painting when its done all on an iphone? I downloaded a sketching app the other day on the new phone for fun, and have been messing around with it. I am a big fan of digital comic artists Ashley Wood and Stjepan Serjic, and have always been inspired by certain digital motifs. SO I decided in some free time, since I'm waiting for some oil to dry on two other new pieces, to start one on my phone.

How to Destroy Angles
With the upcoming sebastepol center for the arts show in january, I had thought of creating a very very experimental piece built around the phrase "How to Destroy Angles" for which I had titled it. I wanted to do something different from what I have been up to, and since most of my focus was on the Novel I'm writing, I figured now was as good a' time as any to go for it. So here it is. While definitely a mess, and also whats come to be par for the course terribly photo'd, there is some elements I like. And some i REALLY do not, namely the acrylic paint, which I fucking loathe with a passion. How anyone works with that crap is beyond me, it's only redeeming quality being it dries fast. Of course now that I've said that, I'll probably do a ton more of them!
anyway, its 40"x30" and its alkyd, acrylic, nail polish, indian ink, pen and ink, sharpie(Oh yeah) and photo collage. It isn't done, and once again photo'd just AWFULLY by yours truly, but you get the idea. What is hard to see here is the blue lines done in the background, which I actually like and may incorporate into some more things. The How to Destroy Angles motif ha sme inspired for some other off the wall things(think x-rays, lino block prints in an art book)

28,000....
..words. The story is done, well the first draft anyway. Now I need to have a few friends proof it, double check for obvious grammar errors and then we will see where it goes from here. I'm starting to move away from the graphic novel idea and have it just be a stand alone novella. Maybe with some accompanying pieces but only as augmenting the overall story.
On another note, starting a new Painting today, although i should say it will be less of a painting and more a mixed media piece, as a center piece for the upcoming show in sebastepol at their center for the arts. The show is called "How to Destroy Angels" and I want to make a darker piece really exploring that theme. Probably a bit out of left field really, but I've some solid ideas planned

iPad?
I've been thinking seriously about getting an Apple iPad lately. Primarily for digital art use. Not only may it be a better tool to use if I do decide to fully illustrate this story i have going, but a great tool for sketching and idea creating. On top of that, in true Dave Mckean and Ashely Wood style(google them!) iI have really ben exploring more mixed media/multimedia options in stuff lately, and the use of digital may add a great element to that. The idea being doing up something digitally, then printing it up on canvas and continuing with oil, spray, ink, whatever. Anyway just musing really.
It's funny really, as much as I tend to harp on Apple as a company(sometimes i really get going), I'm writing this on my iMac and my iPod touch is sitting next to me. And now I'm thinking of getting an iPad. Apparently I am a self hating apple user it seems
If you haven't already, check out the reveal page on the site and notice that I have some works up at place called Artworks Downtown in San Rafael. It's on 1337 fourth street, check it out if you have a chance.

In the shadow of eternity...
...is a name I've been throwing around for a graphic novel I am writing. Really more of an illustrated narrative, in the vein of neil Gaimans "Sandman: The Dream Hunters". I picked it up about a month ago and was so inspired by its format, I started to write the story thats been in my head for few years now. My plan, if I follow through with it, is to illustrate the entire thing with a combo of watercolor, charcoal, oil, and maybe some digital work. For the time being here is a study for my visual ideas

If the ball is rolling does that make me sisyphus?
Regardless...it seems the ball is rolling regarding shows. In November I will be having a show in San rafael CA at Art Works Downtown's "Underground" gallery, and now I have set up a show in Sebastepol CA, and their Sebastepol Center for the Arts for january 2011, which should also be very cool. My Underground show will be entitled "Somewhat Damaged" and the SCA show will be "How to Destroy Angels". More to come as soon as i shore up all the details

You're right I'm not....
It had been awhile since I painted. Maybe a couple months. I had stretched this larger canvas, 80"x60" or something like that, but not painted on it. It kept sitting in my studio, starring at me. Taunting me. For weeks it was there..
Seven feet tall
six feet wide
its stark,
white,
blank surface
starring into my eyes.
I ask the canvas
"Why?
How come this problem
was never had by
Picasso.
He painted
everyday.
I haven't been able
for months. Why
is this so?"
A simple reply
"you
aren't Picasso..."
